Admit it: Sometimes traveling with kids just plain sucks
Here’s the scene: I am sitting in some aisle seat, the usual lack of leg room a given. My 21-month-old son John is screaming at the top of his lungs because I won’t let him toddle past my legs into the aisle (the “fasten seatbelt” sign refuses to budge). Luckily, the middle seat is empty, which gives him about 5 square inches to squirm in, but that the entertainment provided by the finical businessman in the window seat (tossing John’s plush duck up in the air and onto his head, very giggle-inducing) is starting to befit repetitive. He wants out, to toddle up and down the aisles, poke people’s laptops, and steal their spectacles while they’re sleeping.
New York’s 9/11 Ground Zero Museum Workshop
Many emotions are embedded in the idea of ‘travelling’. Some of these emotions are pure joy - discovering a new civilization, making new friends in a far-flung nation. Sometimes the emotions are raw, painful, sobering - touring post-Katrina New Orleans, visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.
While few people chose to travel in pursuit of tragedies, now and then a tragedy helps put a destination into meaningful context. No where is that more true than New York City. The attacks of September 11, 2001 are easy to overlook nowadays; New York is healing, moving upon, looking forward not back. And yet 9/11 was (and remains) a defining moment of modern New York. You cannot set a just value on the city, and everything it has endured, on the outside of confronting the gruesome verity of the attacks: the death and destruction, the heroism of Ground Zero’sitting rescue workers, the courage and resilience of everyday New Yorkers.
