Fly Fishing in the Patagonian Andes

Fly Fishing in the Patagonian Andes

This past November, Patagonia, fly-fishing and empanadas became a first in the story of my life. I was lucky enough to follow the advice of a colleague who made it to this part of the world last year seeking the exotic beauty and adventure stories that have made the Patagonian Andes so enchanting among outdoors travelers.I traveled to San Martin de los Andes, an idyllic enclave set at the foothills of the Chapelco Ski Resort and on the northern shore of Lake Lacar, a city surrounded by mountains, woods, rivers and lakes of pristine beauty. Together with the city of Junin de los Andes, distant about 40 miles from San Martin, they comprise a great network of rivers and lakes that have made this region so famous for its fly-fishing.

Fly Fishing in the Patagonian AndesMy stay took place at a beautiful out-of-town private lodge the Argentineans call ‘Estancias’ (for ‘ranches’), hosted by their owners and popular among fishermen.

Alejandro Buchanan, a warm and experienced fly-fishing guide became my ‘buddy’ for a full three days, and proved to be thoughtful and patient enough to elevate me from the condition of trainee to that of an expert fly fisherman in such a short time. The first day started early and was mostly spent at Alejandro’s own section of river stretch learning all the basics of fly-fishing, but mostly mastering the technique of casting the line.

Fly Fishing in the Patagonian AndesDay two was spent wadding the Malleo River where I caught my first rainbow trout, and instantly became another fanatic fisherman and fell in love forever with Patagonia. By the time I started getting hungry a superb ‘asado’ was near completion at the riverside, which we diligently ate accompanied by a glass or two of great ‘Malbec’ wine. That same night we toured around San Martin de los Andes, a city with life of its own, dozens of nice shops and very impressive restaurants. Our gourmet choice was for the local empanadas at one of the local pubs. God I really enjoyed them!

For my final day, Alejandro summarily concluded that I was ready for a river float, so we took of at one of the bents of the Alumine River, and floated, fished, waded and picnicked for the next 6 hours for the experience of my lifetime. I caught several rainbow and brown trout’s, but a 24” brown trout made my day and my trip to Patagonia truly worthwhile. I obviously kept digital records of my accomplishments in case you or any of my friends would doubt my word. I also have Alejandro as a witness.

Fly Fishing in the Patagonian AndesAll in all, and unforgettable experience and one I would recommend to any outdoors / nature lover, whether you are a proved fisherman or one-to-be. I suggest you get in touch in advance with Alejandro since his services are in great demand during the summer time.
